Amazon DSP cohorts: isolate the sales story before scaling new-to-brand investment
A disciplined approach to cohort definitions, purchaser exclusions, NTB reporting and Amazon Marketing Cloud analysis, without mistaking segmentation for causality.

A strong DSP dashboard can conceal several different businesses: finding unfamiliar shoppers, re-engaging interested visitors and reminding previous customers to buy again. Blending them into one return figure makes it difficult to judge which activity deserves the next pound.
Cohort analysis helps separate those stories. Its value depends on defining the groups properly and remaining honest about what the available signals can establish.
Define the commercial question before the audience
A cohort is a group sharing a defined characteristic or starting event. “Customers first observed purchasing in September” is a cohort definition. “People exposed to a campaign” is another. Neither automatically means new customers of the entire business.
For acquisition, the relevant question might be: what happened after we reached people with no observed prior purchase in the available history? For replenishment, it might be: how did established customers behave after a defined repeat-purchase intervention?
Write down the brand and product scope, qualifying event, history period, cohort entry date, outcome window and treatment of missing history. Otherwise two teams can report incompatible numbers under the same label.
Understand the NTB boundary
Amazon's Display, Video and Audio NTB documentation describes new-to-brand purchase classification using the preceding twelve months of purchase history within the brand on Amazon. It distinguishes promoted-product measures from measures that also include brand-halo products.
A shopper classified as NTB may have bought from the brand earlier than that window or through another channel. NTB is not automatically first-ever purchase, a unique new customer or incremental acquisition.
Keep the lookback used to establish prior history separate from the attribution window used to credit a subsequent event. These are different clocks with different purposes. Use the current definition of the specific report rather than generalising one window across all advertising products.
Build mutually exclusive groups where the question requires them
An illustrative analysis could distinguish observed recent purchasers, observed interested non-purchasers and people without either observed signal. Those are proposed analytical groups, not a promise that every account has the data or activation controls to construct them.
Assign membership using information available at cohort entry. If a later purchase moves someone retrospectively into the purchaser group, the analysis uses the outcome to define the starting group. That can make prospecting appear artificially weak and customer activity artificially strong.
Set a priority rule for overlapping signals and report the unclassified population. “No observed purchase” should remain exactly that description when history is incomplete. It should not silently become “never purchased”.
Use AMC for analysis, not individual customer extraction
Amazon Marketing Cloud is a privacy-safe clean room for analysis and audience building across eligible pseudonymised signals. Amazon states that analytical outputs are aggregated and anonymous. It is not a route to exporting identifiable customer purchase histories.
Confirm which datasets, time ranges, fields and paid features are actually available in the instance. Suppressed or unavailable results should not be interpreted as zero activity. Audience activation is a separate supported process, with its own eligibility and limitations.
Where the platform supports it, purchaser exclusions can help separate a prospecting objective from repeat-purchase activity. Inspect the available history, refresh timing and overlap rather than assuming an exclusion creates a perfectly isolated population. Do not confuse a sponsored-ad bid adjustment with DSP-style audience exclusion.
Reconcile outcomes before interpreting return
Report spend, attributed purchases, NTB purchases and sales, and contribution estimates on a consistent basis. Distinguish orders from units and unique customers. Reconcile totals before adding campaign or cohort results that may overlap.
For illustration, £2,000 spent against 100 attributed NTB purchases gives £20 per attributed NTB purchase. It does not establish £20 per incremental new customer. The stronger claim requires evidence about unique customers and the counterfactual.
Compare cohorts at similar maturity. A cohort observed for ninety days has had more opportunity to repeat than one observed for thirty. Differences in product mix and contribution also matter: more revenue does not necessarily mean better acquisition economics.
Segmentation is not an incrementality experiment
People selected into prospecting and retargeting groups differ before the advertisement appears. Comparing their conversion rates does not isolate the advertisement's causal effect.
Controlled lift studies illustrate the stronger standard: compare outcomes under a credible treatment and control design. Google's Conversion Lift documentation explains the general principle; it is not evidence that this particular tool is available in every Amazon account. Where an appropriate experiment is unavailable, label the analysis observational.
The leadership decision
Approve expansion when the acquisition hypothesis, contribution model and evidence justify it, not because a blended DSP ratio looks reassuring. A useful cohort report makes uncertainty more visible and allocation more deliberate.

Frequently asked questions
Does a DSP cohort isolate incremental sales?
Not by itself. Cohort definitions separate observations; causal isolation requires a credible comparison design and appropriate evidence.
Can AMC export identifiable customer purchase histories?
No. Amazon describes aggregated, anonymous analytical outputs from a privacy-safe environment, with audience activation handled through supported processes.
Does excluding observed purchasers guarantee 100% NTB acquisition?
No. History coverage, identity, update timing and measurement definitions limit that claim. NTB classification itself is not a guarantee of incremental acquisition.
